Goodman Brown, from "Young Goodman Brown" and Hooper, from "The Minister's Black Veil" are two characters that suffer from a pride of intellect. Their pride of intellect changed their whole lives. It can be seen as a cloak that the characters try to wrap themselves in to escape human nature and mankind. It is obvious that the characters did not consider or were not aware of the penalties of their intellectual pride.
