Willys Overland built approximately 1 569 000 CJ series vehicles through the 41 year production stint. In 1953 Kaiser, which was later taken over by AMC in 1970, bought out Willys Overland, and Chrysler then bought AMC in 1987. Following that, in 1998, Chrysler merged with Daimler, to form Daimler-Chrysler. So the Germans, who had lost the war to the Jeep, have now taken ownership of it.
