Steinbeck, Marx and Engels write about can not be solved by a government giving hand-outs or taking over means of production or people rising up in violent revolution. Social and economic conditions separate people into rich and poor, powerful and powerless. This huge chasm of inequality is viewed by many as the source of suffering in the world. Social change is necessary according to these authors to end the suffering and bring equality to mankind.
