Though there are many causes for different countries to have entered World War I, some of the main reasons were heightened nationalism, economic interest through colonial rivalry, and a balance of power in Europe. Key players were the Central powers consisting of Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary; the Allies, a few of which were France, Great Britain and Russia.

The true result of the Great War was after the war. Not only was there prestige loss in the area of world dominance, but also the spark of nationalism in each of the countries caused many ethnic groups to strive for self-determination. This made each of the power-based countries want to maintain a stable government or stable control over its people. What began as a security alliance resulted in a power embarrassment.
