Even though for most mothers a newborn child is a merry time, for some, like Jane, it becomes a tiresome disturbing period that is now popularly understood to be the common disorde; postpartum depression. Jane now feels competent of wondering about John, "Now why should that man have fainted?" and still remains strong enough in her new sense of identity to "creep over him" (Gilman, 129). In just a matter of some seconds, Jane triumphs, in the sense that she literally walks all over her fuming Husband and doctor.
