The Van Allen radiation belt is a doughnut form of energetic charged particles these are mostly protons and electrons which are located around the Earth and which is trapped by its magnetic field. There are two main sources , the first one is the inner belt some call it the Van Allen radiation belt because it was dicovered by a man called James Van Allen in 1958 which studied at the University of Iowa. belt once again in a simpler version I will tell you how it works, it consists of a lot of highley energetic ionized particles which are really trapped in the Earth's magnetic field. When the sun is on a special side or facing the earth on a particular way the magnetic fields are compressed by the solar winds. These radiation belts are composed of electrons with thousand eV energies, and protons with million eV energies.
