These strict laws are based around what sex you are, how much power you are obliged to, and every aspect of religion and the bible. In The Handmaid's Tale, Atwood makes gender, power and religion an obvious issue and cause of the Gilead society. She does this by displaying and limitations set by these things, and portrays their lives as extremely tough, and restricted.
