Followed by John Brown's raid in 1859, the tension clashed into its acme. The
southerners denounced Brown's action but some people in North regarded him
as a martyr. After the election of Abraham Linclon, South Carolina seceded
from the union and so did the other southern states. In 1861 the Civil War fially
broke out.
