We looked at four short stories pre twentieth century; I have chosen to write a essay about three out of the possible four. 'The Monkeys Paw' by W.W Jacobs, 'The Withered Arm' By Hardy and 'The Signal Man' By Charles Dickens. Each of the stories is of mystery and supernatural events. several questions about the native of the visions that need answering. This gives us the best of both worlds.
In conclusion I preferred 'The signal Man' By Charles Dickens. In my opinion his style is very effective he uses great techniques such as pathetic fallacy to build up the setting as the weather was dull and cold as well as there being deaths. Also the build up of suspense and tension made it more interesting.
