Mildred Taylor's historical fiction novel, "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", is an illustration of how slavery was during the Great Depression. It wasn't that the treatment of blacks was new. In fact, slavery had been happening for many years prior to this novel. must face. Throughout the novel, all of the black community endures struggles in order to find freedom and acceptance among the while people who seem to dictate their world. Through the values, knowledge, and positive pride in family and self, they are able to survive and persevere both as individuals and collectively as a family. It is these strong characteristics which are passed down through many generations that keep the Logan family strongly knit together.
