At the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, he was overwhelmingly elected first governor. He remained a governor until 1788.After the long fight over adopting the Constitution, Henry returned to his law practice and retired in 1794. In 1799, at Washington's request, he came out of retirement to run for the state legislature. Elected, he did not live to take the seat, dying on June 6, 1799.
