The fate of the gods towards Oedipus held him in his place throughout his life. He was able to run from destiny whenever it was catching up to him, but in the end wasn't able to escape his destiny as it caught him. He wanted to show that the gods had not left; but, to the contrary, were still a big influence in daily life. Instead, he refused help, priding himself on his manly attitude and accomplishments. Ultimately, the fate given to Oedipus from the gods was what led to his downfall from power.
