Neutralisation is the reaction of an acid with a base or Alkali until the solution is neutral (pH 7). In neutralisation the Acid and the base (or alkali) both looses their properties so the solution becomes neural, salt and water is formed.

Neutralisation is used in the following everyday situations;
Farmers use an alkali called Calcium Hydroxide (slaked lime or lime). This is spread on the fields or ploughed ground.

Other possible demonstrations of this can be taken place for e.g.
v Using Sodium Thiosulphate and Hydrochloric acid. Change the concentration of Sodium Thiosulphate solution and time how long it takes for the image of a cross-drawn under the flask to disappear due to the sulphur being precipitated.
v Using marble chips and acid, measure how long it takes to collect a certain volume of carbon dioxide.
