In March 1953, Kruschev became a new leader of Russia after Stalin's death. Many western powers hoped that he would start a 'thaw' in the Cold war. In 1955 July, 10 years after Potsdam conference, the leaders of US and USSR met in the summit. Unlike Stalin's foreign policy, Kruchev's foreign policy opened up to western powers and the western powers were able to talk to the leader of USSR directly. TV and people whom saw the TV were horrified. In 1957, Russia launched Sputnik, which scared US. Then eventually in 1960, the tension between US and USSR was reaching the highest point because Kruschev made a trading agreement with Cuba. This was when the Cold War got really lucid. The US was extremely horrified because they had a enemy right in their backyard. Kruschev's trading agreement with Cuba was extreme threat to US which increased the tension.
