The Ku Klux Klan was originally formed by six young veterans of the confederate army on Christmas Eve in Pulaski Tennessee during 1865. It was originally named the kuklos Klan (which meant circle clan), but was eventually changed to the Ku Klux Klan which was meant to be a parody of college fraternities and sororities which are usually formed out of three letters from the Greek alphabet.
