No symbol is more potent than the computer in society today. Information technologies in general, and computing in particular, are widely understood as key engines of social change, driving the inexorable transition from the world as it was to the one that is emerging. Technology that in the most part we could not do without today. Even a very stable computer system must periodically be taken out of service for scheduled maintenance and even today when that happens the office turns in to chaos. As humans we have come to rely on the efficiency of technology and this has improved society.
