transfer data across an analogue telephone cable it needs a way of transforming its digital signal into analogue form. To do this a computer uses a modem to transfer its digital signal into a signal that can be sent down the normal telephone cable. The word Modem Comes from the words modulate - demodulate, as the modem goes through the process of modulating then demodulating the data from analogue to digital and then visa versa.
