the recurring motifs in Quentin's internal narratives is the image of his sister in her wedding dress running towards him out of a mirror. It would appear that for Quentin the double as a male figure is associated with the shadow and the double as a female figure is associated with the mirror. So by drowning the shadow, Quentin is able to satisfy his incestuous desire and to punish it.
