I found the theme of "I Stand Here Ironing" to basically be Emily's mothers' responsibility for Emily's upbringing against what should be society's responsibility, or what is thought to be the society's responsibility. I believe that society shouldn't always be held responsible for how someone has been brought up. it seemed like Emily had gotten through all of the problems and turned out to be a well rounded person who found something that they were good at and enjoyed, comedy. The story should have continued a little bit more because with the way the story ended, it would be possible for many people to interpret what they read in many different ways and may come up with another idea of how things turned out.
